A few words of caution and explanation in case a discrepancy is found between the lists presented here and actual findings. Firstly, in southern locations plants will bloom earlier than in northern ones. The data presented here refer to flowering in all parts of the country. Changes in the regular weather conditions such as heat- or cold-waves in the winter, early or delayed rainfall etc. can also affect flowering times.
Global climate change is also claimed to have caused a shift in flowering times in recent years. Future years will tell whether this change is permanent. Therefore, the information presented here should not be treated as exact data, but rather as an average which can deviate from the actual flowering each year. Nevertheless, we hope that this information will be useful for anyone who whishes to know which plants may flower each month.
The Mediterranean climate is characterized by the fact that winter time is the main growth and flowering season. The summer is hot and dry and the conditions are harsh for most plants. Unlike temperate zones, north of us, where the winter is freezing and most plants are inactive, here the weather conditions in the winter are mild and moist. The end of this season is the main flowering time that ends in the spring with fruit ripening and seed dispersal. This is the typical annual cycle of plants that originated in this region. Yet many plants of this country flower in other seasons. For example, water plants flower later since the water are too cold in the winter but in the summer they are not stressed by the heat since they do not lack water. The plants of the Hermon heights also flower in midsummer since their habitat is covered by snow in the winter and not too hot in the summer. We also know those that flower at the end of summer prior too the first rains.
